Frequently asked questions.
Do you do surgeries such as desexing or dentals? What about emergencies?
As this is a mobile only service, we are unable to offer surgeries as a house visit. However, Dr Mae can do routine surgeries by arrangement while working out of Queanbeyan Vet after hours (https://queanbeyanvet.com.au/). Hoppy Housecalls does rabbit only surgery days roughly fortnightly on Saturday afternoons. Please contact us directly about this option if interested.
For emergencies or very sick rabbits, your rabbit is better seen at a clinic rather than in the home. This is because even if surgery is not indicated, typically bloodwork, xrays and intravenous fluids will be and this is not something that is feasible in a home setting. Hoppy Housecalls is happy to refer out to other nearby known rabbit savvy clinics around Canberra and surroundings as needed for any surgical or emergency requirements.
I need a booking outside of your current service area or time, can you still see me?
Absolutely. If you contact us direct we can easily organise for different areas/time slots as needed. Text or email is usually preferred over calls given we are often in consult or on the road and do not have a receptionist. Just let us know what will suit and we will see what we can do.
Why should we book for a mobile service instead of just going to a clinic?
As a prey species, rabbits are easily stressed by the travel, smells and sounds involved in a conventional clinical environment which can predispose them to experiencing stasis, worsening of clinical signs and bonding breakdowns. Home consults are significantly less stressful for rabbits and will also allow our vet the opportunity to see the environment that your rabbit is in to help aid diagnostic processes. Home visits in a rabbit only service also take away the guess work with booking appointments and not knowing whether the vet you see will actually be rabbit savvy or not. Finally, home visits expose your rabbit to less risk of communicable infectious disease from exposure to other rabbits.
Is Dr Mae a rabbit specialist?
No, Dr Mae is not exclusively specialized in rabbits. However, she has a long-standing unwavering enthusiasm for the species and is clinically experienced with rabbit medicine. Hoppy Housecalls also willingly engages in general exotic referrals and liaises with other exotic veterinarians both within and beyond Canberra as needed.
